SIGMA kicks off, the project that brings science and industry together within the framework of the Industrial Doctorates of the Xunta de Galicia

This month, the results of the Xunta de Galicia’s Industrial Doctorates call for proposals were published, awarding grants to 15 projects submitted by Galician companies and technology centres. These doctorates are carried out between a company and a university belonging to the Galician University System (SUG).

What is SIGMA?

SIGMA is part of the industrial doctorate programme of our colleague Lizbet Gutiérrez and aims to develop a genetically based IoT-EdgeAI system to improve seed production and growth in rafts with high predation. It is based on the identification of potential predator species through genetic analysis of stomach contents, combined with visual analysis of interactions in captivity and in rafts.

Different stimuli will be evaluated to scare them away, ensuring animal welfare and respect for the environment. SIGMA will operate autonomously and dynamically in real time, in accordance with the production cycle, and will act as a disruptive transformative element for the sector in Galicia.

A collaborative project between Insati and the University of Vigo

SIGMA will be developed at the CIM-ECIMAT facilities, in collaboration between Insati Innovation and the University of Vigo. This project is co-financed with funds from the Industrial Doctorates programme of the Xunta de Galicia (Regional Ministry of Education, Science, Universities and Vocational Training).

This is a multidisciplinary project that aims to connect science with industry to promote the improvement of a key productive sector: mussel aquaculture in Galicia.
